If you’re travelling to Laos anytime soon, this once-in-a-lifetime activity can’t be missed. In the heart of Laos, lies Vang Vieng, what I like to think of as the adrenaline capital. From tubing to kayaking, ziplining to caving, this place is an outdoorsy adventurers dream.
There’s one activity that really sits a cut above the rest though (literally). At sunrise or sunset, you can experience the stunning, unique landscape of Laos from 3000ft.
Above Laos is a small-scale ‘boutique’ Lao-French hot air balloon company. Their goal is to set the highest standard of safety and quality in Laos. Despite this, flights are still only £111 each which is less than you’d pay in most places.
Compared to other Hot Air Balloon companies in Vang Vieng, it may be slightly more expensive but you get what you pay for. The flight times are considerably longer and you will only have 3-8 of you in the basket so it’s a very relaxed experience. Flights can last from 35 minutes to 1h15 based on the wind.
You can book online here. I would recommend booking a few weeks in advance to get your preferred date and time. And don’t forget your cameras, just make sure to hold on to them!
If you’re not convinced, you can still see an incredible view from Nam Xay viewpoint. But you have been warned, the hike is not easy. It only takes about 30 minutes to climb but when I say ‘climb’ I mean it, you will need to use your hands for the last 10 meters. It’s all worth it for this view though.
