One of my absolute favourite places in the whole of South-East Asia: the Phi Phi Islands have just about anything you could want from a tropical island getaway.
You can walk everywhere on the island and because of this there are no cars, so the air here is very clean. There are also so many yummy restaurants and a fun nightlife making this a hub for backpackers.
Don’t let the name put you off. This is an incredible snorkelling spot that rivals the Great Barrier Reef. There are sometimes harmless reef sharks here, which is how it got its name, but with the number of boats and people, they are usually scared off. You can get a half day boat trip to this spot and Bamboo Island and it’s definitely worth it.
Most nights you can get an incredible fire show for free, no ticket required! Head to Carlito’s Beach Bar in the day to find out if this is happening that night and what time it starts. Arrive a little early to grab a drink and get a front row seat and settle in for the show. Health and safety goes out the window in this performance and no spoilers but there is some audience participation if you’re brave enough!
Picture the whitest sand you’ve ever seen on a literal desert island with warm, crystal clear water and you’ll be close to the beauty of Bamboo Island. From where the boats drop you off it’s a 10 minute walk to the other side of the island which is worth doing for the snorkelling.
It’s roughly a 45 minute walk up to the highest viewpoint, factoring in some stops on the way to take photos, but it’s definitely worth it for the views. It was also really interesting to learn on the way up about the effects of tsunamis on this island in the past and see how different it looked compared to the present day.
A must-see when in the Phi Phi islands. Maya Bay is known for being where The Beach was filmed, starring young Leonardo Di'Caprio. I loved this film and it was one of the reasons I wanted to travel to Thailand so I had to go. Unfortunately, on the day we visited the wind was too strong for us to actually go onto the beach but on the plus side we got to see the beach completely empty of tourists which is a rare sight.
Koh Phi Phi is known for having loads of tattoo studios, luring tourists in with the tattoos for under £30. If you choose to get a tattoo abroad it’s important to check that the artist is using a brand new needle or bamboo stick that you see coming out of a sealed packet. We found an amazing tattoo studio, Mild Tattoo Studio, who also did Stick and Poke Tattoos. The traditional method is less painful than regular tattoos and heals quicker so you can swim straight afterwards.
