and where to find the best cinnamon buns in Stockholm
Fika is a Swedish concept that is translated as ‘a coffee and cake break’ but it is so much more than that. It is part of the culture of Sweden and some Swedes even consider it an essential part of every day.
Fika is a ritual, enjoyed by friends and colleagues alike that both strengthens bonds and improves wellbeing.
It is often experienced by candlelight which provides a sense of warmth during Sweden’s harsh winters. And the word derives from the informal word for coffee: kaffi. Invert that and you get fika!
Cinnamon buns (or kanelbulle) are the most-loved cake of the Swedes and are often the accompaniment for fika. They even have a Cinnamon Bun Day on the 4th October every year!
Top 3 Cinnamon Buns in Stockholm
Set in a bright building by the river, this bakery is as beautiful in the daylight as it is in the dark. You can also see through to the chefs baking in the back and the smell is out of this world. The setting might put this in top space alone but the Cinnamon Buns also win for me on taste. They were soft, sticky and still warm. They also had amazing Cardamon Buns which are definitely worth a try and their Sockerkringla, which is a sugar covered brioche pretzel, was delicious!
On a cold, dark winter’s day you’ll be happy to escape into the warmth that is Gast Café. Lit by candles and decorated in true Scandinavian style, it’s a beautiful place to join Swedish locals in fika. Their cinnamon buns are soft and sweet and perfect paired with one of their freshly pressed juices.
They say you’re never more than a couple meters from a Fabrique. Well they might not say it but it’s not far from the truth! These bakeries are dotted all over Stockholm but don’t be put off by the chain. Pop in on your way to Djurgården or Gamla Stan and you’re guaranteed a delicious, chewy Cinnamon Bun for your afternoon break, if it lasts that long!
