If you’re travelling to an area without clean drinking water, such as South East Asia, you may inevitably have to buy some bottled water. However this bottle can reduce the number of single-use bottles you need to buy. It comes with a replaceable 3 stage filter which removes 99.99% of bacteria and contaminants as well as improving the taste. It is 500ml so perfect for day trips and BPA Free. The filter also lasts for 240 uses!
You may not be wearing a lot of makeup if you’re travelling to a humid climate or not planning on going anywhere fancy but it’s nice to keep up with your skincare even whilst you’re away. Instead of makeup wipes or disposable cotton pads that get thrown away after one use, opt for reusable ones like these and you can throw them in with your laundry to sanitise them every few uses.
It’s no use talking about reducing our waste on land if we’re still polluting our oceans with harmful chemicals. It isn’t that well known but most high street sun cream brands in the UK contain chemicals that are highly toxic to marine life, including coral, fish and dolphins. Some destinations, including Hawaii, have even banned the stuff! I have opted for Bondi Sands Sunscreen Lotion with SPF30 as this is vegan and cruelty free, has UVA and UVB protection and 4 hours water resistance. It is also formulated in compliance with Hawaii’s regulations and is free of oxybenzone and octinoxate which are believed to cause coral bleaching.
Check with your airline if you are only bringing hand luggage as you may have the knife confiscated. But the most sustainable thing you can buy is nothing! Bring a set of your own cutlery from home, including a knife, fork and spoon and you can add a metal straw and reusable chopsticks if you have them. These will be more durable than bamboo or plastic ones, are easy to clean and saves you a little bit of money too!
